From the crumbling fire trap in the Subura to the less dangerous versions around the cattle market. the Insula was Rome's apartment and hi rise complex. Some sprouting five stories or more boasting taverns, bakers and less "decent" places to spend a denarii! They were (at times) mass affordable housing for the masses.
